Logo design: Kerry Day Arts

Kerry Day is a botanical lino printer and sculptor based at Document Studios in St Judes, Bristol. She asked me to create a business logo for her during the latter part of the covid lockdown periods. We picked one of her monochrome prints as a base emblem design. I felt that the contrast in her work — flat areas of colour and finely cut lines — might be well represented by a Bodoni-type font, so I picked Zuzana Licko’s Filosfia, mainly because the contrast isn’t too extreme, and there’s a certain bulgey-ness to the end strokes that felt a bit more like a lino print.

It transpired that Kerry’s Squarespace website offered Filosofia as an option, which was pretty perfect: no clunky compromises on a close-enough font family for a different medium.

Kerry had the banner, above, produced for Bristol’s upcoming season of winter and Christmas markets and craft fairs. She’s otherwise going to have it displayed in her workspace: we thought the pegs were a fitting mounting device given that that neatly reflects the way she hangs prints to dry!
